FAQ

  • How do I get involved?

You’ll need to start with an advertised role; on our opportunities page, click on the role description and follow the instructions on the page to sign up/apply.

  • Why do I 'sign up' in a micro role, but apply for a regular role?

With our regular roles, we informally interview potential volunteers to make sure the role is a mutually good fit, and we need application forms to work out who to interview.

For a micro role, where you may be volunteering for a day or two, we prefer an informal phone call to run through the details of the day.

  • What if I can't find a role that suits me?

It could be that we don’t offer a particular opportunity yet; however, you can always register interest in our roles and be added to our mailing list for future opportunities.

To sign up for our mailing list, head to our contact page:

  • When do you recruit for specific roles?

We recruit throughout the year, but not every role will recruit at the same time. Some roles will recruit across the year, whereas others will be once or twice a year. Micro roles can sometimes be one-offs, but we are likely to have similar roles return.

  • What do I need to be a volunteer?

For all our roles, we enjoy working with friendly, enthusiastic, and motivated people. For a few roles we require some experience, but the vast majority of our roles do not require any previous experience.

For our regular roles, you will need to provide details of two references and in some cases, complete a DBS check.

  • I receive benefits/universal credit. Can I still volunteer?

Yes - but you should check with your work coach and/or the conditions of your benefits agreement before you volunteer.

  • I am on a Tier 4 Student Visa - can I still volunteer?

Yes - our volunteer roles are ‘volunteering’ rather than voluntary work. Please always check with the Home Office guidance for specific terms of your visa.

  • Who will manage the activity I am supporting?

Across the Museum, we have staff members who act as ‘Volunteer Supervisors’. These staff members will organise the activity you are supporting, and arrange your experience.

The Volunteers Officer is an additional person available to support volunteers, and also supports the Volunteer Supervisors across the Museum.

  • I have a disability/long term health condition. Can I still volunteer?

We want our roles to be as accessible as possible; when you make your application, you can declare a disability and we will discuss reasonable adjustments we can make.

In some cases, it may not be possible to adjust the role. In this instance, we will look at alternative roles that you could undertake.
